"they had appointed elders in every church" (Acts 14:23)

 

There are several descriptions of elders in the New Testament:

  • Elders - Acts 20:17

  • Overseers - Acts 20:28

  • Shepherds - 1 Peter 5:2

  • Pastors - Ephesians 4:11

  • Bishops - 1 Timothy 3:1

 

Each word above is a description of a work to be done, not a religious title.  1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, and 1 Peter 5:1-4 all discuss the qualifications and responsibilities of being a pastor in the Lord's church.
